I’ve been an animal person for as long as I can remember. Growing up, there was always a dog in the house, and I spent most of my childhood following ours around the yard, convinced we understood each other perfectly. (We mostly did. He still stole my sandwiches.)
When I moved into my own place, getting my first dog as an adult was both the best decision I ever made and a genuine shock. I thought I knew dogs. Turns out knowing a family dog as a kid and being fully responsible for one are two very different things. I made every classic beginner mistake — the wrong food portions, a collar that didn’t fit right, a “training” approach I picked up from a random video that confused us both. My dog forgave me. The internet’s conflicting advice did not help.
A few years later a cat adopted us (that’s really how it happened — she walked in, looked around, and decided she lived here now), and I got to be a beginner all over again. Litter box placement, scratching posts, the 3 a.m. zoomies — a whole new education.
PawsGuide exists because I kept wishing someone had just told me the simple, practical stuff upfront. Not a textbook. Not ten contradictory opinions. Just: here’s what worked, here’s what didn’t, here’s the mistake to skip.
Everything here is written from real everyday experience with my own pets, in plain language, for people who are starting out. You’ll find routines that fit real schedules, product guidance based on actually using the things, and honest opinions — including when the answer is “it depends on your pet.”
One important thing: I’m not a veterinarian, and nothing on this site is veterinary or medical advice. It’s general pet care guidance from one pet owner to another. For anything about your pet’s health, your vet is the person to talk to — always.
